Astrónomo alemán. Fue el primero en medir (por medio de
paralaje) la distancia a una estrella distinta del Sol. Uno de sus descubrimientos más importantes fue que las estrellas brillantes
Sirio y Proción tenían pequeños movimientos explicables sólo por la existencia de compañeros invisibles que perturbaban sus movimientos. Su observación de pequeñas irregularidades en la órbita de Urano, causadas según Bessel por un planeta desconocido ubicado más allá de su órbita, condujo al descubrimiento de Neptuno. Sus funciones matemáticas para estudiar el movimiento planetario fueron muy usadas para resolver un amplio rango de ecuaciones diferenciales.
